The biggest test of any word wizard is to condense lengthy advertising rhetoric into a neat bite-size little tweet while still delivering the overall message. Twitter is a marketing platform that can allow you to reach followers almost immediately. This can be wonderful if the purpose of Twitter marketing is instant updates on special events or announcing “flash-sales”. However, the average frequency of these types of scenarios pales in comparison to the number of tweets you must use to engage followers and entice new ones. So here are the looming questions, “What should I say when it’s not big news and how can I keep it short AND interesting?” Not to fear, I have suggestions and — duh-duh-da-duh — EXAMPLES!

One type of tweet that can keep your followers interested would be a tweet about your industry or an industry-related topic. It doesn’t have to be “new” information; it just has to be relevant to you. Let’s say you own a flower shop, you are not always going to have exciting new flowers or a sale to promote, so to keep interest with your followers you tweet:

@flowershop1 – “Fashion week trends have set the mood for hot flowers of the season – stop by #1 Flower Shop today for exotics in oranges, reds and greens!”

This brings current information that would interest people aside from the happy horticulturists that are already visiting your shop. Here’s another approach you can take to grab some potential customers that are nearby without having to discount merchandise and sale away your profits:

@furniture4U – “Rain’s on the way, stop by quick to see our comfy chairs and TV stands to make tonight’s storm a fun night in rather than a dreary night out.”

Giving potential customers the weather report might make more pay attention to your tweet (at least read it) and encourage them to check out what you have to offer. Above all else, keep your information current. No one will un-follow you quicker than if you’re talking about something that has been talked about and tweeted about for months already. The best idea is to just have fun and enjoy what you are saying, because hopefully potential customers will too.

The dark ages of only being able to target broad audiences as a whole with commercials and print ads are over. In addition to these platforms, a more focused approach is now available: mobile marketing. Mobile marketing reaches individuals on a personal level. According to a recent Pew Research study, Americans and Text Messaging, 83% of American adults have a cell phone and 42% of those own a smart phone capable of checking email, internet and social media sites. These numbers are growing daily, so it is unrealistic to have a complete and comprehensive online campaign without including space for mobile marketing.

Text message marketing is one facet of mobile marketing that makes it easier to contact those cell phone users who haven’t jumped on the smartphone bandwagon yet while still being able to reach those that have. There is a greater chance that someone will open and read a text message than interact with a different form of mobile marketing. There is a more personal connection to a text message, and if you use opt-in phone number lists, a higher chance that you are reaching a qualified consumer. According to the same study, 73% of cell phone owners send and receive text messages and one third of that number prefer to be texted as opposed to receiving a voice call. The frequency of those Americans that communicate with their fingers is high; the trick is reaching them with 160 characters or less!

While text messaging is a mainstay in mobile marketing, new ways of reaching the mobile- savvy consumer are growing (including the Apple cult iPad users). Those that are able to surf the internet or download apps have seen the ways that companies are branding themselves for mobile devices with mobile sites and games. Mobile banner ads also offer a chance to market to consumers while they are using their smartphones for work, or maybe just wasting time at the doctor’s office. While the cost and development of apps and mobile sites may not be right for every business, email marketing can be achieved on mobile devices and tablets at a relatively lower cost, and it’s almost like killing two birds with one digital stone. The moral of the story is: if you exclude mobile marketing from your advertising plan it would be like shooting an arrow with no point; you will probably hit the target but miss the bull’s-eye.

Sites like Facebook and Twitter help build steam for any client’s online campaign. Perks like being TOTALLY FREE to sign up and the ease of posting wherever you may be at any time of day or night are reasons why these sites have caught on like wildfire. Here are some small suggestions that might help your social media presence:

1. Post early – For many multi-tasking smart phone geeks the urge to check all of your social sites begins right after you turn off your alarm and before that first cup of caffeine. Having a fresh post during this morning time will give your cult following the chance to catch up on what might have transpired through the night or what is planned for the day. There is a science to this however; knowing if your consumer sleeps till noon or is up with the sun matters, which leads to another step…

2. Know your audience – The only way to convert followers to customers is to understand what types of things they are interested in enough to get them to pay attention to the client’s message. Being top-of-mind is very important for social media to be effective; queue step 3…

3. Frequency is your friend – To be a successful and effective social media pro you must keep the frequency of your message strong. There is a difference between being a borderline spammer and keeping your tweets or facebook posts in the regular feed of followers. An irregular posting schedule can cause not only a lack of interest in your clients but also lose your followers completely, which defeats the purpose of social media altogether.

4. Be off topic often – Clients obviously want to post information about their products/services, events or sales that are going on, but don’t be restricted to these rigid, organizational parameters. Those that use social media are using, it above all else, to have a digital social life and having “non-human” posts will not get their attention. Mix in posts about current events outside of business or a picture of employees celebrating National Moustache Day or anything that will catch the eye of your target.

5. Interaction increases transaction – Even though a business is not an actual person, if you have followers and are liked on Facebook your business has friends. Something as simple as saying “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations” can make your business closer to that person than some long-distance relatives. Someone who feels like a company has taken a personal interest in their life is going to be more likely to take a financial interest in that company.

To heighten awareness of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare blood disease that shortens children’s lives, the St. Louis Cardinals will provide a pre-game ceremony allowing Justin Akin, (General Manager of All Star Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep) the opportunity to throw out the first pitch, May 31st, Cardinals vs. Giants. 7:15 pm. The Cardinals always make a strong effort to support Children’s Charities. Justin and his wife, Kristin, lost both their children within 9 months of each other due to HLH. This has led the Akins on a quest to help other parents of terminally ill children with HLH and establish the Matthew and Andrew Akin Foundation www.matthewandandrew.org. To raise awareness of HLH, Justin will embark on a 1,216 mile bike ride traveling Route 66 from Amarillo, TX to Chicago, IL. NOTE: Justin is not a practicing cyclist. He is riding for his children, to make up for their lost miles, since they can no long ride their bikes down the street. Justin is also doing this because he can, to illustrate that so many of us take for granted the things that we can achieve. Justin’s bike tour will begin Sunday, May 22nd in Amarillo, from “The Big Texan”, famous “Home of the 72oz. Steak” and conclude in Chicago, at Buckingham Fountain, June 5th, on what would have been his son Andrew’s 4th birthday. Justin will ride through St. Louis, May 31st, stopping here for a night’s rest and to throw out the first pitch at the Cardinals game. Please join him at the game, or go along for the ride…Justin will be updating his ride daily with video, photos and content on www.afathersride.com. Justin’s primary goal is to raise awareness of HLH blood disease, to fund research and urge people to join the National Bone Marrow Registry.
